Aloe helenae, also known as Vahondrandra, is a rare and exotic species of aloe from southern Madagascar. It is a non-branching tree with a slender trunk and a single rosette of long, recurving, olive green leaves that turn red in bright light and drought. During winter to early spring, Aloe helenae produces multiple inflorescences with yellowish green to yellowish orange flowers. This species is critically endangered and is known to occur in only a few populations in the Toliara Province of Madagascar. It is easy to care for and can be planted in full sun in well-drained soil. Although it is frost-tender, it is easy to cultivate in mild areas and is a unique and attractive addition to any garden.

These plants originated as "offsets" ~18-24 months ago from a parent plant that has been happily growing in a 15 ga container for several years in filtered to full sun. Aloe helenae is not a desert plant - in fact the parent plant seemed much happier when moved from a spot on a slope in full sun to a large pot. The parent plant has thrived outdoors here in the SF Bay Area with temps between 33 - 100+

This plant has been grown in a 1ga pot. You will receive a very similar plant to the one in the picture. The plant is shipped "dry-root" (with no dirt).

Note: these plants have since grown and have been re-potted in 7ga and 10ga pots. They are available for pick up only. Use the contact form to inquire about their current prices.
